Start of the Gibraltar Straits Tunnel Takes Another Step Forward

The start of construction of the Gibraltar Straits tunnel has taken another step forward.

The 38-km railway tunnel, which will link Spain and Morocco, will allow the Spanish high-speed train network, the second largest in the world after China, to link with Morocco’s expanding high-speed rail network, the only one in Africa.

The world famous tunneling machine builder Herrenknecht has completed its study that indicates the technical feasibility of the project according to the Spanish Company for Studies on Fixed Communication across the Gibraltar Strait (SECEGSA).

On Nov. 25 it was reported that SECEGSA commissioned the Spanish engineering firm Ineco to design an exploratory tunnel to be dug, to study and confirm underground conditions before building the main tunnel. At a cost of nearly $1 million, the design would be completed by August 2026.
