Ukraine's Assassination Target Identified as Head of Russian Security Council

Last week, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced that Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Directorate (HUR), headed by Kyrylo Budanov, had recruited three individuals to assassinate an unnamed high Russian official when he visited Moscow’s Troyekurovskoye cemetery, where close family relatives are buried. The FSB stated that they had detained the three individuals and that their coordinator in Kiev had been indicted.

Now, Russian media have identified the high Russian official as none other than Sergei Shoigu, the former Defense Minister and present Secretary of the Russian Security Council. His father, mother, and sister are buried at that cemetery, and it was expected that he would be at the cemetery on Nov. 12, the anniversary of the death of his mother, Alexandra Yakovlevna. The identification of Shoigu has provoked commentary.
