Advancing the ties between India and Ethiopia, and the vision of the Global South and the BRICS, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Ethiopia’s parliament on Dec. 17: “Indeed, solidarity is a strength, and cooperation is power. And today, as nations of the Global South, as ancient civilizations, as friends, India and Ethiopia are standing together.” Ethiopia and India are both members of the BRICS.
Modi is making a three-nation tour, having visited Jordan, and next visiting Oman. India, with its giant economy, is outlining a vision for a new world order. “The Global South is writing its own destiny….” he said. “Our vision is of a world where the Global South rises not against anyone, but for everyone: a world where development is fair, where technology is accessible, and where sovereignty is respected. A world where prosperity is shared, and peace is defended. And, a world where decision-making reflects today’s reality, not the world of 1945. Because the world cannot move forward if its systems remain locked in the past.”
Modi noted that Indian soldiers fought alongside Ethiopians for the latter’s liberation in 1941.
