While Egypt and the U.A.E. oppose Israel’s destruction of Gaza, this is not stopping them from engaging in economic partnerships with Israel.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Dec. 17 that his nation had signed a $35 billion deal that would include supplying natural gas to Egypt. Netanyahu said that the deal represented an “economic and strategic achievement.” The agreement would ship natural gas from the Leviathan natural gas field to Egypt through 2040, or until contracted amounts are reached. Egypt’s State Information Service, in confirming the agreement, announced that the deal “is a purely commercial transaction … and does not involve any political dimensions or understandings whatsoever.”
