The sharp cuts by Donald Trump-Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in anti-malarial programs are contributing importantly to a resurgence of malaria, as well as other diseases, particularly in Africa.
The anti-science mob that is ripping apart the health and medical science system in the United States is doing the same internationally.
The U.S. government has been involved in global anti-malaria activities since the 1950s. In 2005, the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) was launched to scale up efforts against malaria in the hardest hit sections of Africa. In March 2025 the U.S. Congress passed the Continuing Resolution that included a funding level of $805 million for the PMI and other anti-malaria activities at the U.S. Agency for International Development, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (this also included a few other programs). However, for the fiscal year 2026 budget, Trump submitted a request for malaria of only $424 million, a sharp cut of $381 million from 2025 levels.
