Russian General Assassinated in a Moscow Car Bombing

Russian Gen.-Lt. Fanil Sarvarov died in a car bombing this morning, Dec. 22, in a residential area of Moscow. He was the head of the Operational Training Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces. Previously, he had served over 2015-2016 in the planning and execution of military operations against terrorism in Syria.

Russian Investigative Committee Spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko told TASS: “According to an investigation, on the morning of Dec. 22, an explosive device planted under a car was activated on Yasenevaya Street in Moscow. Fanil Sarvarov ... has died of injuries from the explosion.” She said that Moscow’s Main Investigative Directorate opened a criminal case and that, amongst several theories regarding the murder, “One of them is that the crime was organized by the Ukrainian security agencies.”
