Trump Holds Tongue on Putin-Witkoff Negotiation, Notes that Time Is Not on Kiev's Side

After two weeks of leaks about and around the '28-point’ peace plan and its variations, there was quite a build-up to U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner’s meeting in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Three days after the meeting, the good news is that it lasted five hours, both sides remarked on good to excellent progress, and that the content has been kept private. Russian President aide Yury Ushakov provided an unusually positive Russian readout at the time, which emphasized:

“The talks were extremely useful, constructive, and very substantial… We didn’t discuss specific wording or specific American proposals, but we discussed the essence.” And

“Of course, we also discussed the enormous prospects for future economic cooperation between our two countries. Incidentally, this had been discussed at length earlier, at previous meetings. But now it was emphasized that if we truly want to cooperate—and there are enormous opportunities for this—then we must demonstrate a genuine commitment to it, both in Moscow and Washington.”
