On his way to meeting U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Dec. 28, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a stop in Canada to consolidate and coordinate his positions. He met with Prime Minister Mark Carney, where the two hosted a joint phone meeting with all of Zelenskyy’s European handlers in order to discuss “current progress along the diplomatic track,” according to a post on X by Zelenskyy. “We went over the most important priorities together.” After the call, Zelenskyy posted that, “Strong positions are needed both at the front and in diplomacy to prevent Putin from manipulating and evading a real and just end to the war.” Zelenskyy also held a “detailed phone call” with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, where the two discussed “preparations for the meeting with President Trump.”
On the day of Zelenskyy’s visit, Mark Carney announced a new $2.5 billion support package to Ukraine, which notably only included spending to roll over debt and backstop other loans to Ukraine, but not weapons or any other supplies.
