China’s Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, a primary port servicing the Maritime Silk Road for the world, has ranked first in the world in cargo volume for the 17th consecutive year. The port, in East China’s Zhejiang Province, announced on Jan. 5 that it handled cargo throughput of 1.4 billion tons and more than 43 million standard containers in 2025, milestones that position the port to extend its global lead in total cargo volume for a 17th consecutive year and cement its status as the world’s third‑largest container port.
Global Times notes that “despite a challenging international climate marked by slower global trade growth and geopolitical volatility, the port recorded a leap in comprehensive operational capacity in 2025…. Network expansion and faster services have underpinned this growth. As of the end of 2025, Ningbo‑Zhoushan operated 309 container services connecting with about 700 ports in more than 200 countries and regions, with nearly 300 vessel calls per day.”
