The U.S. Navy conducted its first transit of the Taiwan Strait on the night of Jan. 16-17. The U.S. 7th Fleet confirmed that the guided missile destroyer USS John Finn and a survey ship called the USNS Mary Sears made the transit “through waters where high-seas freedoms of navigation and overflight apply in accordance with international law. The ships transited through a corridor in the Strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal state,” reads the statement.,” reported USNI News.
A Chinese military spokesperson reported that “The Chinese PLA Eastern Theater Command deployed its navy and air force troops to monitor and track the US vessels’ movements.”
