Five Republican Senators voted on Jan. 8 to enact a war powers resolution, resulting in the bill passing 52-47. The Senators were Rand Paul, Lisa Murkowski, Todd Young, Susan Collins, and Josh Hawley. The vote would also need to pass the House and be signed by the President in order to become law, and there currently is not a vote planned in the House, nor is there a majority large enough to override a likely presidential veto.
President Donald Trump pitched a fit after the vote, explicitly targeting the five Republicans. He posted on social media: “Republicans should be ashamed of the Senators that just voted with Democrats in attempting to take away our Powers to fight and defend the United States of America. Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul, Josh Hawley, and Todd Young should never be elected to office again. This Vote greatly hampers American Self Defense and National Security, impeding the President’s Authority as Commander in Chief.” He also claimed the War Powers Act is “unconstitutional.”
