Trump Administration Considers Naval Blockade of All Cuban Oil Imports

Politico revealed this afternoon that President Donald Trump is considering adopting the policy demanded by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, to impose a full naval blockade of Cuba, cutting off all its oil imports—from any location—and creating the conditions for regime change by unleashing a devastating humanitarian crisis. Politico cites three unnamed individuals as sources for the information, two of whom confirm that this is Rubio’s plan, but indicate that Trump hasn’t yet made up his mind whether to go with the total destruction of the island.

The argument here is that Cuba’s economy is already so devastated by years of financial warfare, a U.S. embargo, and by having lost its supply of Venezuelan crude after the invasion and kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro on Jan. 3. As if they were betting on a racehorse, those who share this view say that the economy is so weak that the government will be ripe for regime change. Both Trump and Rubio reportedly share the view that the government could fall very soon. Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) who is salivating over the expected collapse of the communist government, said in a recent interview: “There should be not a dime, no petroleum. Nothing should ever get to Cuba.”
