Yesterday afternoon, on Jan. 7, U.S. President Donald Trump called for a 50% increase in the Pentagon budget for 2027, from $1 trillion to $1.5 trillion in a Truth Social posting. “This will allow us to build the ‘Dream Military’ that we have long been entitled to and, more importantly, that will keep us SAFE and SECURE, regardless of foe,” he claimed. He claimed further that such an increase is being made possible by the “tremendous income” that his tariffs are supposedly bringing in.
Earlier, Trump had railed against the profiteering of the defense industry in two Truth Social postings and an executive order. “Defense Contractors are currently issuing massive Dividends to their Shareholders and massive Stock Buybacks, at the expense and detriment of investing in Plants and Equipment,” he said. “This situation will no longer be allowed or tolerated!”
