Italian Foreign Minister Says That Italy Cannot Join Trump Council of Peace

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani told ANSA News Agency that Italy cannot join U.S. President Donald Trump’s “Council of Peace” because of constitutional restrictions. He said that conflicts between Italy’s constitution and the charter of the Board of Peace were “insurmountable from a legal standpoint,” but his country would always be “available to discuss peace initiatives.”

Despite an otherwise close relationship between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Trump, Italy joins the other European countries, France, Germany, and the U.K., which have also not joined the board.

Tajani pointed in particular to Article 11 of the Constitution which precludes the country from joining organizations unless there are “conditions of equality with other states,” and this would not be the case under a charter that names Trump as wielding veto power, hence serving as the final authority on its interpretation.
