Lukashenko Says His Commitment to the Peace Board Does Not Affect The Belarus-Russia Relationship

In a discussion with Sergei Glaziev, the State Secretary of the Russia-Belarus Union State, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko underlined the solidity of the Belarus-Russia relationship. He noted that his decision to join President Trump’s “Peace Council” had caused some confusion and led to some speculation regarding his intentions in doing so. Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin, had also been invited to be a member, but has hitherto not made any decision.

The meeting was focused on the upcoming meeting of the Union State Supreme State Council on February 26. “On the eve of the Supreme State Council, we have a multitude of issues that we must discuss and, if possible, reach a common point of view,” Lukashenko said.” I don’t think there are any issues where we cannot align our positions and reach a unified decision.”

“We are seriously committed to working with Russia to the extent that Russia is capable of doing so,” he said. “You understand more than anyone that we have diverged greatly on certain issues. In the economy, too. Fortunately, in politics and diplomacy, life has forced us to be together in the military-industrial complex and in the defense sector. Although I have always suggested not losing sight of this issue. And there were times when the Russian leadership and the military thought, ‘So what about Belarus? We can manage without Belarus.’ Time has shown that we have very few friends. And we cannot do without each other. And thank God that this time has put us all in our place,” Lukashenko emphasized.
