Algeria, Niger Reach Another Economic Cooperation Breakthrough

Algeria and Niger have reached another economic cooperation breakthrough with the breaking ground for a new 40 MW ‘Solidarity’ Power Plant Near Niamey, the capital of Niger, on March 23. This follows the relaunching of the Nigeria–Niger–Algeria pipeline on February 16, after a long period of tensions between the Niger and Algeria as well as Nigeria, during a working visit to Algeria by Niger’s President Abdourahamane Tiani on February 15–16, 2026.

The launching of the power station project occurred during a visit to Niger by a high level delegation led by Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, which arrived in Niamey on March 22 for the meeting of the Algeria–Niger Joint Commission for Cooperation. Niger’s Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, led the delegation of Niger in a two day session of the Joint Commission. Both delegations were received by Niger’s President Abdourahamane Tiani.

Agreements were reached committing both sides to broad economic, political and security cooperation including in the areas of energy and hydrocarbons, transportation and transit, infrastructure, finance and banking, and communications.
