Italian Government Loses Referendum on Judiciary Reform

The Italian government lost a national referendum on a constitutional reform on Monday. The reform as such consisted in separating prosecutors’ and judges’ careers after the French model, but voters voted more along soccer fan lines ("tifosi") than in the merit. With a voter participation of 59%, the opposition could mobilize more voters than the government and won with 53.7%.

The opposition succeeded in turning the issue into a vote for or against a “totalitarian attempt by a Trump-friendly, pro-war government, to control the judiciary.” Although there is some truth to it, this narrative is pushed by mainstream media such as Politico and the EU liberal establishment. Even TASS picked it up, forgetting, however, that Italy has opposed the Coalition of the Willing warmongers.
