Donald Trump ripped into UK Prime Minister “Sir” Keir Starmer for his failure to totally support Trump’s colonial rampage in Iran, ranting that Starmer “is no Winston Churchill”—an accusation that would please anyone with a sense of colonial history. Tony Diver, Associate Political Editor of the London Telegraph, wrote today: “If there was any doubt about the perilous state of the special relationship, it has surely been laid to rest by Donald Trump’s latest extraordinary attack on Sir Keir Starmer.” He called Trump’s declaration that Starmer was not Churchill a “damaging and symbolic criticism.”
Starmer is also being attacked for sending a mere warship to Cyprus after Iran hit the British base there with a drone. “His critics say that the proper response would have been to send an aircraft carrier—the enormous ships commissioned at a cost of almost £8bn under the Tories that have seen little action at sea.” He only stopped barely short of reviving the call for “Britannia Rules the Waves.”
The British Establishment appear to be working on repositioning themselves for the post-Iran world, in order to remain in control of the trans-Atlantic system even as it crumbles into chaos.
