A U.S. attack struck a freshwater desalination plant on Iran’s Qeshm Island on March 7, disrupting water supplies in 30 villages, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi charged. “Attacking Iran’s infrastructure is a dangerous move with grave consequences. The U.S. set this precedent, not Iran,” Araghchi posted on X, calling the move a “blatant and desperate crime.”
The U.S. denied responsibility—but it has also denied that it initiated the war.
The sanctioning of attacks on desalination plants in this region is a thoughtless move that can have significant consequences. All six water-deficient Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations, which have a large expanse of desert, are extremely vulnerable.
