Speaking at the Foreign Ministry briefing on March 25, Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marian Zakharova clarified Russia’s position on Iran’s nuclear program. “The crisis, including the potential for nuclear catastrophe, is ongoing. Russia consistently advocates for a swift end to the violence and the beginning of dialogue aimed at a long-term, sustainable settlement. We remain committed to this,” the diplomat noted.
“Regarding the fate of Iran’s stockpiled nuclear materials,” she said, “neither the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons nor the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement with the IAEA impose any limits on the quantity of nuclear materials possessed by non-nuclear countries, which they produce, specifically through the process of production and enrichment, provided that their nuclear activities are under IAEA control. Therefore, we can only discuss voluntary measures on Tehran’s part, which in no way calls into question Iran’s legitimate rights under the NPT. Iran alone will decide how to exercise these rights.”
