With a little over half of the votes counted in Hungary’s parliamentary election, the longtime Prime Minister Viktor Orban conceded defeat. His Fidesz party only had 39% of the vote against the 52% of Peter Magyar’s Tisza party.
Orban called the results “painful and clear.” He said that he had “congratulated the winning party” and that his Fidesz party will continue to work for its voters. He told his supporters: “The responsibility and possibility of governing was not given to us. We are going to serve the Hungarian nation and our homeland from opposition as well... What the result means for the fate of our country and the nation, and what its deeper or higher meaning is, we do not know now, time will decide. No matter how it turns out, we, as opposition, will serve our country and the Hungarian nation.”
