CEO Alexey Likhachev of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom announced on Saturday, April 18 that it was ready to assist Iran in transferring enriched uranium from Iran to Russia, reported Sputnik on April 19.
“During the [U.S.-Iran] negotiations the issue of removing Iranian enriched uranium continues to remain a key and painful question. … And here only Russia has positive experience of cooperation with Iran. In 2015, at the request from Iran, we already transported enriched uranium from Iran. We are ready to assist with this issue today as well,” Likhachev remarked to Strana Rosatom newspaper.
He also noted that the transportation of Iranian enriched uranium “remains one of the most difficult issues,” reported (www1.ru) website. “The difficulties are associated not only with logistics and technical requirements, but also with the level of trust between the participants in the negotiation process.”
U.S. President Donald Trump had announced on Friday, April 17 that Iran and the U.S. would jointly remove uranium from Iran’s nuclear sites under any peace deal, to be transferred to the U.S., reported numerous press outlets.
However, Esmaeil Baghaei, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, told state television: “Iran’s enriched uranium is not going to be transferred anywhere. Transferring uranium to the United States has not been an option for us,” noted Middle East Eye.
