US Senate Votes Down War Powers Resolution, Again

The US Senate voted down another War Powers resolution, S.J.Res. 123, on April 15 which would have halted President Trump’s ability to continue military operations against Iran without congressional approval. The vote, 47 to 52, fell mostly along party lines, with Rand Paul (R-KY) and John Fetterman (D-PA) the only ones to vote against their respective parties, and was a repeat of the previous March 4 vote.

A parallel resolution in the House of Representatives is expected to be brought to the floor for a vote on Thursday, April 16 by main sponsor Gregory Meeks (D-NY), with many predicting a much closer vote than in the Senate.

While the Congress has so far failed to uphold its Constitutionally mandated responsibility to declare war—and to protect the people from illegal wars—a massive mobilization from both inside and and outside the United States to pressure Congress to cut off the funding, as was done with Vietnam, and thus actually end the Iran war, is being led by independent candidate for US President Diane Sare.
