On May 28, Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Amir Saeid Iravani spoke at the UN Security Council hearing on upholding the UN Charter, which began on May 26, to remind the world that the United Nations was created to protect future generations from the “scourge of war.” The ambassador noted that the UN’s core principle was to stop the use of force or the threat of force. However, “this has all been increasingly undermined by unilateralism, coercion, double standards, and the total disregard for international law and humanitarian law,” he said. “Several countries have been involved in this, but especially the United States.”
The ambassador continued: “Recent aggressive action taken by the United States against Venezuela, Iran, and now Cuba reflects a dangerous pattern of coercion, intimidation, and interference in internal affairs of sovereign states in great violation of the principles of the UN Charter. No nation should assume that it will remain immune from the far reaching consequences of such unlawful and destructive policies and practices that threaten the sovereignty, independence, and stability of all states and endanger international peace and security.”
Irvani said that he “speaks from direct and painful experience. In June 2025 and again on February 28, Iran was subjected to an unlawful act of aggression from the United States and the Israeli regime in the blatant violation of the UN Charter, international law, and international humanitarian law. The deliberate targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure, causing numerous civilian casualties, including women and children, and killing 168 students and teachers in a missile attack against a girls’ school in Minab. These attacks inflicted severe humanitarian suffering and extensive economic damage.”
