The Senate voted today 53-47 to reject moving forward on an implementation of the War Powers Act (WPA), entitled “A joint resolution to direct the removal of United States Armed Forces from hostilities within or against the Islamic Republic of Iran that have not been authorized by Congress.”
Two Republicans voted for the measure, Senate Appropriations Chair Susan Collins and Rand Paul, while one Democrat, John Fetterman, opposed it. For Collins, who is facing a tough election challenge, it was a switch from her previous votes against war powers resolutions. She stated: “Further military action against Iran must have a clear mission, achievable goals and a defined strategy for bringing the conflict to a close. I voted to end the continuation of these military hostilities at this time until such a case is made.”
