Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi briefed China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi yesterday on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that Iran had signed with the U.S. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, as reported by China Daily, responded that a glimmer of peace has emerged. Wang stressed the next crucial step, that all parties translate their commitments into concrete action, while removing attempted disruptions. In the phone call, he said that China welcomed the MoU, and he underlined the reality that force and power politics cannot solve problems, and that it had to come to dialogue and negotiation.
Wang made a priority of the issue of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, as the common concerns of the international community were at stake. Further, he encouraged Iran in the direction of Iran improving relations with regional countries and explore the joint building of a regional security architecture. China stood ready to support such matters and, in general, to consolidate and deepen bilateral ties with Iran.
For his part, Araghchi said that Iran has always viewed its relations with China from a strategic height, and that he hoped the two countries would further enhance mutual trust, deepen cooperation in various fields, and jointly advance their comprehensive strategic partnership. China, said Wang, a comprehensive strategic partner, has always supported both Iran’s reasonable and legitimate claims and its efforts to safeguard sovereignty and security, along with Pakistan’s mediation efforts.
