Congressional Democrats are trying to figure out how they can attack Donald Trump over the peace deal with Iran while still not supporting war with Iran. Some peculiar and contorted lines of reasoning follow. According to an article in Responsible Statecraft, “As the Trump administration claims victory for the diplomatic deal, Democrats in Congress are scrambling for an appropriate response. Some are flatly criticizing the terms as “surrender,” others are welcoming the agreement as a necessary step, and many are trying to navigate a more delicate political path: how to register dissatisfaction with the president without appearing to prefer continued war over compromise.”
Typical is Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, who visits Kiev frequently and believes we can’t do enough to arm Ukraine against Russia. Regarding the Iran war, he posted on X, “Who knows if there will be a final agreement. But if there is, two things will be true at the same time:
a) It’s essentially surrender to Iran.
b) We should be glad about it, because every day this insane, illegal war continues, we get weaker. “
Murphy continues in a long eight-point rant ending with, “Trump has humiliated America. He accomplished none of his goals. He was forced to surrender on Iran’s terms.
“If the agreement actually gets signed (and there is a very good chance it won’t and we’ll be back at war soon), be glad the war is over. And then hold Trump accountable for having started it.”
Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) calls the peace plan “a disaster,” blasting Trump for “releasing billions of dollars to an enemy…” (He doesn’t mention that the money was Iran’s to begin with.)
No wonder so many Americans are fleeing from partisan politics.
