The A-One Steel Group, a large private steel manufacturer based in South India, will soon begin the construction of an integrated steel mill in Tanzania at the cost of $230 million. Construction is expected to start in July and will be completed within 15 months. This will be Tanzania’s first steel mill and it will use the country’s substantial iron ore deposits.
“This is a strategic area, and we have placed great emphasis on ensuring that we achieve the goal of ending the export of raw minerals,” Tanzanian Minister for Minerals Anthony Mavunde said on June 15 following a meeting with Himanshu Tiwari, Managing Director of A1 Iron & Steel Tanzania. Ltd. For his part, Tiwari described the facility as a model integrated plant capable of managing the entire production chain.
The project will be located in the Nala area of Dodoma City, Tanzania’s national capital that lies in the center of the country and is on the new standard gauge railway which connects it with the country’s main port of Dar es Salaam. It is expected to create 1,500 direct jobs and over 5,000 indirect jobs.
