Malaysian PM: We Remain Russia's Friend and Are Moving to Trade in Local Currencies

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, while attending the June 18 Russia-ASEAN summit in Kazan, Russia, told RT in an interview that Russia, unlike several Western countries, “honors its commitments” and remains a friendly partner of Malaysia’s. That stands in contrast to Norway, he noted, which had recently cancelled a signed deal with Malaysia which had been 95% paid for.

Reuters, citing Malaysia’s Defense Minister, reported in May that “Malaysia is seeking compensation of more than 1 billion ringgit ($251.76 million) from Norway after Oslo abruptly cancelled export approvals for a naval strike missile system‌ intended for Malaysian combat ships.” Norway claimed “certain export licenses of specific defense technology to Malaysia were revoked due to changes in Oslo’s export control regulations. The decision caught Malaysia off guard and sparked a diplomatic row, with its Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim calling the move ‘unilateral and unacceptable’.”
