Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu traveled to Washington from July 22-23 at the invitation of the U.S. side, meeting a number of senior American officials as both governments work to prepare President Xi Jinping’s state visit, now confirmed for late September.
During the two-day trip, Ma held consultations with Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, met separately with Ivan Kanapathy, the White House National Security Council’s senior director for Asia, and with Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby. He also held exchanges with members of both the Senate and House of Representatives, according to a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement released Friday.
China’s Foreign Ministry characterized the talks as an “in-depth exchange of views” focused on implementing the understandings reached between Xi and President Trump and on advancing what it called a “constructive strategic stability relationship” between the two powers.
