An excited and lively audience in Berlin on July 3 attended the fully packed cinema Babylon for the premiere performance of Nord Stream—The Explosion by Moritz Enders and Gunther Merz. People applauded and cheered, or booed key protagonists in the film during the two-hour documentary viewing, which was followed by a panel discussion. Due to the big demand, two more Berlin showings have been set, for July 7 and July 15.
The masterful film is an excellent and very timely organizing tool to mobilize people for the much needed turn-around of current German politics. It avoids any narrow focus. It places the Nordstream sabotage in the historical context of geopolitical sabotage of key Eurasian infrastructure projects, such as the Berlin-Baghdad Railroad. It documents continuous U.S. efforts since the beginning of Soviet-German gas deliveries to stop and sabotage this safe and low-cost energy connection, which became the basis for strengthening German-Russian and European Russian relations, and enabling Germany’s economic growth for decades. (As a reminder, on Feb. 1, 1970, the so-called “century-deal” between West Germany and the USSR was signed (natural gas-pipeline deal), and on Oct.1, 1973, the first gas flowed into use in the German energy network.)
The film appeals strongly to people, to stop today’s sheep-like behavior and reactivate those impulses for sovereignty, which some previous leaders of this country (even if limited) still displayed. The bleak future of total collapse of the economy of Germany (and European economy as a whole), if we do not stop the current march into militarization and war-preparation against Russia, comes across very strongly, including in an interview with Mittelstand entrepreneur from Lüdenscheid (NRW) Axel Turck. He was also present in the panel discussion following the film, along with the filmmakers, Werner Rügemer, and others, who participated in the film, answered questions of the audience, and spoke about their motivations to produce this film.
