Eighty-two years ago today, on August 25, 1944. German General Dietrich von Choltitz surrendered the city of Paris to General Philippe LeClerc, leader of the Free French Army, defying a direct order from Adolf Hitler to defend the city to the last man and leave nothing but ashes behind.
Many historians date the “beginning of the end” of the Third Reich to that day.
