A large percentage of Greek households cannot afford basic needs, while more than half of Greek households cannot afford unexpected expenses, including medical expenses. The rate of purchasing power of Greek households is even lower than in 2015, when the country was under a regime of strict austerity.
According to a Eurostat survey on the main social and economic indicators in Europe, published on July 9, 50.5% of the population could not meet unexpected expenses in 2025, such as repairs or doctors’ fees. This is up from 43.9% in 2024 and constitutes the highest rate in the European Union. This is almost double the bloc average, which stood at 29.2% in 2025. The percentage of the population at risk of poverty and social exclusion in 2025 was 27.5% , the second-highest percentage in the EU after Bulgaria (29%).
