The Lead
Is There an End in Sight?
by Stewart Battle (EIRNS) — Aug. 30, 2026
We have to agree with the warning issued by Tucker Carlson and Joe Kent on Carlson’s Aug. 28 show: “A nuclear war ends inevitably in the destruction of all human life on the planet,” Carlson began. “Reports in the last two weeks indicate that, during meetings within the Pentagon about how to respond to Iran in that current war, the possibility, the option has been floated of using what are called tactical nuclear weapons... discussions about their use have taken place in the Pentagon and we’re here to confirm that that is absolutely true.” Kent, the former director of the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center, backed up Carlson’s statement, saying, “we would be fools to think this [a nuclear strike -ed.] couldn’t happen here, especially as this administration scrambles for a way out.”
Within 24 hours of that discussion, Atlantic Council senior fellow Ariel Cohen fully confirmed its veracity, in an op-ed in The Hill newspaper. Cohen gushed about Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby’s attempts to lower the threshold for the use of tactical nuclear weapons in a potential regional conflict involving Russia or China, as EIR has documented. “The Department of Defense is drafting a nuclear strategy that places far greater weight on shorter-range, lower-yield tactical weapons in a regional conflict with Russia or China,” he wrote, a move he claimed would decrease America’s “credibility gap.” Washington must treat such a lowering of the threshold for nuclear weapons “as leverage,” Cohen wrote, with the goal that it “eventually forces Moscow and Beijing toward a negotiated framework.”
The climate of danger surrounding this insanity was only increased over the weekend as the Trump administration resumed direct attacks against Iran for the first time in nearly a month, striking Iranian missile launchers it claimed were preparing to launch sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz. Iran immediately retaliated with multiple waves of counterattacks on U.S. bases and assets across the region. The war in which Trump has failed so miserably, he is still refusing to walk away from. Meanwhile, real human rights abuses abound as Israel’s onslaught against Gaza and the West Bank continues at an accelerating pace.
Meanwhile, the conflict in Ukraine is also escalating. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced Aug. 30 that Russia has “begun inflicting massed strikes on Ukraine’s energy facilities” in response to Kiev’s attacks on Russian infrastructure. Further, it has been widely reported that Russia has intensified its drone and missile bombardment of targets across Ukraine over recent days, as well as logistics hubs and remaining seaports “involved in the interests of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.” As with the war in Iran, this conflict could easily shift beyond conventional weapons to a nuclear exchange, especially as Ukraine’s Western sponsors increase their active involvement and disregard Russia’s legitimate security interests.
The world has reached a tipping point: On the one hand is the potentially bright future shared between mutually sovereign and collaborative nation-states, while on the other is the palpable insanity—or just pure stupidity—of defending a dying imperial outlook. Affecting which way the world goes requires citizens everywhere to stare this issue squarely in the eyes, and act from the standpoint of the necessary future we must now bring into existence. Toward this end, EIR will be holding a crucial international roundtable: “An Alternative to War and Looting in the Americas” on Sep. 4. Make sure to register now and attend.
