Russia and Iran held interministerial consultations on Aug. 10 in Moscow on arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported. The Russian delegation was led by Oleg Postnikov, head of the ministry’s Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control, and Mohammad Hassan-Nejad Pirkouhi, Director-General of the Department of International Peace and Security Affairs of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, represented Iran.
The Foreign Ministry release reports that “considerable attention was paid to prospects for overcoming the crisis triggered by US-Israeli aggression against Iran,” with attention to resolving the issues around Iran’s nuclear program. The talks, described by Moscow as part of implementing the Russia-Iran Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, covered increased coordination ahead of the upcoming session of Disarmament and International Security Committee (First Committee) of UN General Assembly at its 81st session, due to begin in early October, as well as upcoming events within the IAEA, OPCW and BWC frameworks. Both delegations agreed to continue intensive bilateral contacts on these issues.
