Interviewed by the ZDF “Sommerinterview” program, AfD leader Alice Weidel answered a question referring to the party program, which calls for an exit from the Euro. She did not give a clear-cut “yes” or “no” answer, but what she said was enough to unleash hysterical reactions from the German media, with few exceptions, which shouted “Weidel Wants To Exit From The Euro” in their headlines.
In reality, Weidel was ambiguous. If you listen to the interview, from min. 8:42 to 11:28, she insisted that “Germany was better before the Euro,” that the Euro is a weak currency and is not a state currency, but she refused to answer “yes” to a precise question as to whether the AfD will, as declared on page 62 in its program, work to achieve an ordered exit from the Euro.
The fact is that in February 2025, in another television interview, Weidel said that to exit from the Euro was “too late” ("viel zu spät"). The media saw the Sommerinterview statements as a backtrack from that position.
