The Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement Friday morning in which it stressed respect for Yemen’s independence, national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and called for an end to the illegal and inhumane siege by Saudi Arabia, reported Mehr News. It reaffirmed Iran’s principled and consistent position on the need to respect Yemen’s independence, national sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and to end the “illegal and inhumane siege” of the country. The ministry emphasized the need to consider the interests of the Islamic Ummah, particularly as West Asia faces the unprecedented oppression and expansionism of the Israeli regime with U.S. complicity. It said resolving issues related to Yemen through continued siege and military alignment is not possible.

At about the same time, the Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement reporting that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi spoke by phone with his Saudi counterpart, Faisal bin Farhan. According to the Iranian readout, they discussed bilateral ties and the latest regional developments. “Both sides pointed to the escalation of tensions and the rise in insecurity across the region and underlined the need to keep cooperation and diplomatic efforts going in order to prevent the spread of the crisis and return stability and security to the neighborhood,” reported IRNA.

The readout was published this morning, though it indicates the conversation took place last Saturday. It also makes no mention of Yemen, though it must have been at the top of their agenda.
