Truckers in Sicily have cleared roadblocks after a meeting with Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, who promised measures to alleviate gasoline prices. Truckers in other Southern Italian regions are apparently still blocking roads. Truckers, including the Sicilian ones, will stay mobilized as long as structural measures are not implemented, they say. As of yesterday, food shelves in supermarkets throughout the country started to empty out . No fresh fruits and vegetables, or eggs and milk; no bread (bakers stopped baking, because they could not send out the product).

The farmers’ and truckers’ protest has expanded to other layers, from Southern to Northern Italy. While truckers are blocking North–South highways, and farmers the national roads in Southern Italy, steel workers in Genoa have blockaded the port (the main commercial port in the country). The Genoa workers moved in solidarity with their comrades in Taranto, who were protesting the closure of the local steel plant. The Taranto plant and the Genoa plant are part of the same group (formerly ILVA and now Acciaierie d’Italia) that is being destroyed by a Green-judicial fury. Taranto is supplying Genoa with high-quality sheet steel, which is then processed. The decision to shut down the last blast furnace in Taranto has stopped supplies and production in Genoa.
