On Oct. 12 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent a letter to Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, and Shin Bet chief David Zini, demanding that they “act urgently to uncover the identity of all those who are involved or appear in the libel film NAZA.” The film, whose title means “collateral damage,” shows how little Palestinian civilian lives are valued by the IDF.

Netanyahu’s letter also calls for “the opening of a criminal investigation and prosecution for serious information security offenses, criminal defamation, and harming Israel’s diplomatic and security interests.” Netanyahu started the letter stating, “The film spins a false, misleading, and biased narrative that defames the State of Israel and the IDF globally and severely damages Israel’s standing.”

After NAZA won a top award at the Venice Film Festival, a “counter-film” was quickly developed by the Israeli propaganda machine to discredit NAZA. The film—marketed in a way to attract searches for the real film—is called “NAZA: The Real Story.”

After sold-out screenings across Italy in late September, more than 150 Italian theaters were extending the screenings of the original NAZA for at least another week, due to the high demand. Over the course of October, the documentary will be released in 50 countries, and in mid- or late November the film will be available for free streaming on The Guardian’s website.
