On Saturday, President Trump appeared to distance himself from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s plan to livestream the execution of Nidal Hasan. He told reporters at the White House that he had not yet decided whether the execution would be broadcast. “There are two thoughts: don’t show it and show it. Cause you know, by showing it, maybe other people won’t be doing what he did. So I’ll make a decision ultimately. I know what the military would like to do, but I’ll make a decision,” Trump said.

The Daily Mail notes that what it called Trump’s backpedaling comes after he endorsed Hegseth’s idea on Wednesday, saying Hasan “deserves it.” On Friday, Trump said the Pentagon was “making a determination” on the livestream, adding that either way Hasan would be executed by firing squad. “I really don’t care how he goes, as long as he goes. And I think the death penalty is a very worthy way of going for him,” he said.

The Pentagon has confirmed that the execution is scheduled for Dec. 3 at Fort Hood. If carried out, it would be the U.S. military’s first execution since 1961 and its first by firing squad since 1945.
