In case anyone didn’t get the point that everything that goes wrong in Europe is Russia’s fault, the UK House of Commons Library put out a synopsis, with a link to a longer PDF report, on “Russia’s hybrid warfare campaign in Europe.” However, it’s worded in such a way so that it can’t be accused of making assertions without evidence by reporting what others have accused Russia of.

“Russia has long been accused by Western countries, including the UK, of using ‘sophisticated hybrid strategies’ to destabilise the international system in pursuit of its strategic interests and to undermine Western support for Ukraine. It then lists eight actions that Russia has been accused of taking in Europe, many of which have also been used against Russia and many other countries by the U.S. and European countries, including, to name but two, “interfering in democratic elections,” and “conducting and/ or sponsoring malicious cyber activities.”

“Russia’s campaign of instability is considered by NATO and several European intelligence agencies to be escalating,” the House of Commons report says. “Incidents of alleged Russian sabotage, criminal damage, disinformation, and aggressive military tactics and rhetoric are becoming more commonplace, as is the use of proxies to conduct low-level activities in EU and NATO countries on behalf of the Russian state.”

Leading the way, as usual, is the Daily Mail, which hysterically reported on Tuesday that “Speculation is mounting that Russia has expanded its hybrid war across Europe, with fridges being hacked, flights diverted by bomb threats, and Russian troops showing signs of preparing for a potential new incursion into the continent.” Fake bomb threats sparked airline chaos across Europe while “British supermarkets have been placed on high alert after cyber hackers hit shops across Europe, seizing control of their fridges and freezers.” The alleged Russian cyberwar on freezers has supposedly even spread to the U.S. with claims of attacks on commissaries on 14 military bases.
