On Nov. 2, an unvaccinated 7-month-old child died from measles in Lewis County, New York, about 93 miles north of Syracuse. Since August the state has been dealing with a growing measles outbreak, which is concentrated in 10 northern counties that include Amish communities, where the vaccination rate tends to be lower. New York state has 178 confirmed measles cases, including 15 in Lewis County.
Gov. Kathy Hochul said the death was “a devastating reminder of what’s at stake when Washington deliberately erodes decades of progress in protecting Americans from preventable illnesses.”
