Pope Leo XIV participated in an Oct. 30 meeting in the Vatican on “The Future of AI: A Dialogue Between the Vatican and the Scientific World on the Developments and Applications of Intelligent Technologies,” and continued to address the challenges which AI has brought with it. According to Vatican News, “Pope Leo stresses the importance of keeping the human person at the heart of this technology to avoid the danger of threatening the common good and reducing people to data points.”

Pope Leo’s encyclical Magnifica Humanitas is dedicated to the subject of AI, and he outlined for the meeting five central considerations about AI:

1) “We have the responsibility to guide, change, and, when necessary, reject its applications.”

2) “Some have suggested giving these systems rights or legal personhood,” Vatican News reported. But Pope Leo underlined how this risks “obscuring human responsibility and leaving those who suffer harm to confront a faceless entity.”
