US Senate Votes Up War Powers Resolution Against Trump's Iran War

The US Senate voted 50 to 48 in favor of a War Powers resolution directing President Trump to withdraw U.S. armed forces from hostilities against Iran after four GOP senators crossed party lines to vote for it. Those Republicans were Senators Rand Paul (Ky.), Susan Collins (Maine), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Bill Cassidy (La.). Sen. John Fetterman (Pa.) was the only Democrat to vote against the measure. Two Republicans, Dave McCormick (Pa.) and Mitch McConnell (Ky.), missed the vote. They had both voted multiple times against similar resolutions in the past.

According to The Hill, it directs Trump under the 1973 War Powers Act to remove U.S. troops from hostilities against Iran, though it accepts elements of the armed forces that would be necessary to protect U.S. assets or allies from imminent attack. It’s the same resolution the House had passed 215-208 earlier this month but because it’s a concurrent resolution it does not go to the President for his signature and does not have the force of law.
