Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone conversation on May 5. According to a press release by the Russian Foreign Ministry,: “The parties continued their productive exchange of views on key elements of the Russian-American political dialogue, which has recently seen a notable intensification. The primary focus was the Ukraine crisis. Building on the discussions between President of Russia Vladimir Putin and U.S. Presidential Special Envoy Steve Witkoff on April 25, the Minister and the Secretary of State highlighted the importance of reinforcing the emerging conditions necessary to launch negotiations aimed at establishing a reliable framework for long-term, sustainable peace. Other international issues were also addressed.”

The talks were characterized as “constructive and businesslike,”

In a readout of a statement by Tommy Piggott, Deputy Press Spokesman for the State Department, it was declared: “Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke today with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss next steps following the October 16 call between President Trump and President Putin. The Secretary emphasized the importance of upcoming engagements as an opportunity for Moscow and Washington to collaborate on advancing a durable resolution of the Russia-Ukraine war, in line with President Trump’s vision.”
