The website of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or CAL FIRE [https://fire.ca.gov] reports that 24 new wildfires popped up in areas of Northern California on Friday; by Sunday, all of these had been contained. Overall, over 5,300 firefighters are working to contain about 20 other wildfires statewide, with 12 of these remaining major incidents.
On Saturday, Oct. 24, the entire Bay Area was put on Red Flag Warning until Oct. 27. A Red Flag Warning means that higher temperatures, low humidity and strong winds combine to increase the risk of wildfires; over the weekend, wind gusts are expected to go upwards of 50 to 70 mph in parts of the Sierras and the coastal mountain ranges. These dry, gusty winds could also bring down power lines or other equipment, which have been blamed for causing several wildfires in the past.
