Central America’s Regional Electrical Market Operator reported on July 7 “an electrical blackout of regional magnitude” in the Central American electrical system and declared a state of emergency, EFE news service reported the same day. The failure led to total blackouts in Honduras and Nicaragua, and blackouts affected some parts of El Salvador and Guatemala; only Panama and Costa Rica remain connected to the interconnected grid. Causes of the blackout are unknown.
