Draghi Government Reiterates Opposition to Messina Bridge

Infrastructure Minister and Club of Rome Italy head Enrico Giovannini has cheated on Parliament by declaring that his government will finance a new feasibility study to decide on the best solution to connect Sicily to mainland Italy. The study, financed with 50 million Euro, shall decide whether a single- or three-span bridge is the best solution.

Giovannini, who issued his statements in front of a Parliament committee, demonstrated that the government “only wants to lose time.” Giovannini “wittingly lies,” said Messina Bridge expert Enzo Siviero. In fact, a three-span bridge is no alternative to a single-span; indeed, it has been established that its pillars would be built exactly on the fault line under the Strait of Messina, whereas the single-span would be built farther north.

Sicily industry association Alessandro Albanese also blasted the decision, saying that it is “walking on the tightrope of a manifest and substantial will not to build the Bridge over the Strait [of Messina].”
