Extending Life of Nuclear Power Plants in Switzerland Is a Given

A source who has for many years led a pro-nuclear initiative in Switzerland, told EIR that the decision to extend the life of existing nuclear plants in Switzerland has been de facto decided. However, building new plants is not on the agenda, as in the current setting, it is “too expensive.” A solution to make it cost-effective would be small modular reactors, but they are not yet commercial and Switzerland will wait and see how other countries will develop them.

For the moment, the anti-CO2 tax has stopped the Green transition scheme, but the greenie government has not surrendered and will find new ways to push the scheme forward, the source said. The source played down the upswing in favor of new nuclear plants by billionaire Mrs. Martullo-Blocher, saying that the faction led by the party (SVP) chairman is against it.
