The Swedes, with NATO’s help, are preparing for a Russian invasion of Gotland Island in the middle of the Baltic Sea. A main feature of the ongoing BALTOPS exercise is a drill to practice retaking the island from Russian occupation (there seems to be nothing behind this idea except for hysterical fears of “Russian aggression” whipped up since 2014). The Swedes demilitarized the island in 2005 but have since remilitarized, re-establishing a Gotland garrison of 400 troops in 2018. Now, the island is at the center of the BALTOPS exercise.
